Compared to last year, April had a +61% increase in market share. Although March had a 72% growth in sales value, April continued the trend with +67% growth. Sales and numbers are at a stable high and the future looks promising – the only difference between these previous months are the categories. If TVs were the workhorse for the market in March, it was the MDA sector in April. The SMP and SDA sectors followed in second place with huge growth in wearables. However, the IT sector saw a 4% decline in unit sales compared to March last year, while sales value grew by 7%. Overall, the results look promising with MDA growth of 92%, SDA +119% and TVs up 69%, while the trends remain the same – buying less but spending more.

In reality, April should have done better than March because all stores were open for a full month. However, TV and IT dragged April down quite a bit. IT Sector’s numbers are expected to fall in the coming months. TVs were lower, though, due to low inventory.

As expected, MDA showed the best results. With more and more physical stores reopening, it truly reflects on MDA’s high sale numbers. The biggest increase was seen in cookers, freezers and tumble dryers. There was also growth of around 90% in built-in appliances. It is clear that April was the month for MDA, while May is expected to be even bigger.

The SDA sector grew 61% compared to last April. The biggest difference between this April versus last year is that in addition to vacuum cleaners and hot beverage vending machines, sales of irons grew 92%. On the other hand, this April saw an 8% decline in razors compared to last year. Overall, the trend for vacuum cleaners and hot-beverage-makers remains the same as last year, although it’s nice to see that the irons group has joined as well. It is safe to assume that there will be no decline in the SDA sector in the coming months.

As mentioned earlier, the TV sector underperformed compared to March, although it did better than April last year (Sales Units +37% and sales value +69%). It’s worth noting that if prices continue to rise, we may not see major growth, but this summer’s major sporting events could also help boost TV sales.

The IT sector had the most modest results. If March had a 26% growth in Sales Units, April had a 4% drop. Clearly, the peak of IT is over for now, at least until the end of the year. The biggest declines were in notebooks and tabs, on the other hand, monitors grew 69% and are expected to grow at least through August. For printers, the market has remained stable.

The SMP sector has proven in the last two lockdowns that physical stores are critical to its performance. Growth at Sales Units was 82% and +82% in Value. It is expected that the coming months will definitely be profitable although not record-breaking.

The market in April showed great numbers.
